A class-action lawsuit against xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot, now includes 4 plaintiffs. A Wyoming woman has joined 3 teenage girls who alleged that Grok used their childhood photos to generate child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

What Is the xAI Lawsuit and Who Joined It?
Three teenage girls filed a March 2026 xAI class action lawsuit alleging that Grok created CSAM from their photos. Someone they knew prompted Grok to create explicit photos from their current-day likenesses, which were made without AI-generated labels.
The girls sued xAI for emotional distress and other harm related to the images. On August 15, The Washington Post reported that a fourth woman has joined the lawsuit after Grok generated CSAM from her photos as well.
The newest allegation goes further than the previous three claims. The Washington Post report clarified that the new plaintiff says Grok generated child sexual abuse material from photos taken when she was a child, rather than editing her present-day likeness into CSAM.
New Safety Measures and Investigations
Earlier this year, xAI rolled out safeguards after the allegations, tightening who could use Grok’s image generation tool and blocking the most obvious “undressing” prompts. The safety measures arrived only once public pressure and documented harm had piled up.
Somewhere along the way, Grok was launched without those safety measures in place. California’s attorney general opened an investigation to get additional answers. Regulators in the UK, the European Union, and Ireland also followed with their own — several of which are still active.
These investigations are crucial because sexual abuse image generation is a widespread issue on X. Reporting from the Center for Countering Digital Hate found that Grok generated 3 million sexualized images in an 11-day period.
The growing xAI lawsuit reflects this bigger issue. Safeguards should protect women and girls from nonconsensual sexual assault materials. Women also deserve to know that they may be able to take legal action after surviving abuse.
